Professor Brian D Smith is a world-recognised authority on the evolution of the life sciences industry. After gaining his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Newcastle University, he worked in the industry for 20 years in R&D, marketing and strategy roles before moving into academia. His PhD, at Cranfield University, uncovered why some firms make strong strategies and others don’t. He now works at Bocconi University and the University of Hertfordshire, where he supervises a research group of PhD students who apply Darwinian thinking to the evolution of the pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors. He has published over 300 books, papers and articles in this area, including “The Future of Pharma”, “Darwin’s Medicine”, “Brand Therapy” and, most recently “Leadership in the Life Sciences”. In addition to his research and writing, Professor Smith advises many of the industry’s leading firms about the evolution of their business models and the adaptation of their competitive strategies to their changing social and technological environment. He welcomes comments and questions on his work.
