Dr. Roy Alexander Sparringa is currently a Senior Advisor at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), He was previously Chairman of the National Agency for Drug and Food Control / BPOM (2013 – 2016). Prior to the position as the chairman, he was Acting Deputy Chairman for Therapeutic Product, Narcotic, Psychotropic, and Addictive Substance Control, BPOM (January-August 2012), Deputy Chairman for Food Safety and Hazardous Substance Control, BPOM (2010-2013), Assistant to Deputy Minister for Medical and Health Sciences, Ministry of Research and Technology (2007-2010), Deputy Director for Food Safety Surveillance and Response, BPOM (2001-2007), Policy Analyst for Health and Medical Sciences, Ministry of Research and Technology (2000-2001) and a researcher in food microbiology including the development of antibiotics at the Biotech Center-BPPT (1994-1996).
Dr. Sparringa received a number of strategic positions such as Chair of ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standard and Quality – Prepared Foodstuff Product Working Group (2010-2014); Chair of ASEAN Food Safety Standards Harmonization Working Group, International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) SEA Region (2010-2014); and international consultants for food safety (FAO and WHO, 2005-2013; and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), 2017). He is currently also a Member of National Codex Committee Indonesia (since 2011), a Member of advisory boards at the Indonesian Society for Microbiology (Permi), Indonesian Pharmacist Association (IAI), and The Indonesian Association of Food Technologist (PATPI). Dr. Sparringa is also a Lead Inspector for food safety, visiting lecturer at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Indonesia, and Bogor University of Agriculture, Indonesia. He received a number of awards, such as Wibawa Seroja Nugraha, National Resilience Course, Lemhannas, Ganesa Wirya Jasa Utama From Bandung Institute of Technology (2015) and the Honorary Recipient 40th New Zealand-ASEAN Anniversary Awards from New Zealand Government (2015). Dr. Sparringa is currently President Commissioner of PT. Amerta Indah Otsuka. He received his B.S. in Food Technology from Brawijaya University, Indonesia (1985), his M.S. in Food Microbiology from University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (1994), his Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology from University of Reading, UK (1999), and Principal Engineer at the BPPT (2017).
